Home » Celebrate But Stay on Track: Holiday Meal Tips from a Dietitian

‘Tis the season for holiday cookies, charcuterie boards, potlucks, and party platters. There’s no denying that food is a major part of the holidays. But for those with health goals or dietary limitations, it can be difficult to celebrate without sabotaging your best efforts. The following tips from Kristen Hubbard, Registered Dietitian at The Villages Health, will help you eat well while enjoying your holiday traditions.

Take a Step Back

Step back from those holiday spreads and savor the beauty of a well-dressed table, from flickering candles to festive décor. Also take a moment to contemplate your food choices. “Look at all the options before you start filling your plate,” Kristen says. “That way you can pick the ones you really love and still leave room for your holiday favorites.”

Snack Ahead

While you may think saving your calories gives you more leeway, skipping meals often backfires, leading to overeating.

Implement The Plate Method

“The plate method suggests filling half of a 9-inch plate with fruits and vegetables, one quarter of the plate with lean protein, and the remaining quarter with carbohydrate foods,” says Kristen.”
