After my rant in the August issue of The Voice, I thought September’s topic would be something other than Golf Cart Safety. My mistake. A goal of The VHA is to provide collaborative efforts to ensure consistency in our community. The City of Wildwood has provided us with an inconsistency that is costing residents money.
Wildwood decided to enhance the Florida State Laws regarding operation of golf carts (LSV) by adding language regarding number of passengers on a bench seat, and age of passengers sitting with an adult. These regulations are only in effect within the Wildwood City limits.
When I questioned the Wildwood Police Sergeant about the rules and exactly where the City limits are, he replied, “there’s an app, look it up.” Well, I do not have the app nor do I want one. I want to drive within our community without worrying whether I am in Lady Lake or Leesburg, Marion County or Sumter County, Springdale or Hillsboro. I expect consistency.
I will continue to work toward a consistent set of rules governing golf cart operation. For now, you need to be aware of the rules in Wildwood. There is no education regarding the new regulations. You will be issued a ticket and, in many cases, told to walk. I suggest you call the City of Wildwood directly to get a copy. I also suggest you call your city council members and express your opinion.
The Wildwood City Council did not include any language regarding the use of seatbelts in golf carts. That my friends is a lost opportunity.
