Why Volunteer with Us? The VHA Helping Hands is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free loaner medical equipment—walkers, wheelchairs, crutches, and more—to residents of The Villages. By volunteering, you can help ensure our community members stay mobile, safe, and independent.

Volunteer Opportunities

1.   Call Coordinator

Role Overview:

• Answer incoming calls and emails from residents reserving equipment.
  • Schedule reservations and give resident pick-up/drop-off information.
  • Provide friendly, patient support and clear instructions. Schedule & Commitment:
  • Calls are taken between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM, Monday–Friday
  • Flexible scheduling is available, and a cellphone and a laptop are provided so you can work remotely. Skills & Training:
  • Friendly telephone manners and practical communication skills
  • Basic computer familiarity: experience with Excel is a plus.
  • Training and mentorship provided—no prior nonprofit experience required.

2.   Equipment Handler

Role Overview:

• Move Durable Medical Equipment (DME) to and from office storage and off-site storage facility

• Select, inspect, and stage equipment reserved by residents for pick up
  • Monitor and adjust physical inventory of equipment when needed Schedule & Commitment:
  • Flexible schedule, usually works one day biweekly.

Skills & Training:

• Training and mentorship provided, three training sessions covering equipment, its operation, and the safety inspections needed.
  • Will use the Helping Hands Cargo Van to move DME to and from the off-site storage facility
  • Must have a clean, verifiable driving record, a valid driver’s license, and be able to lift 40 lbs.
