From country clubs to quaint cafes, dining options abound in The Villages. But for older adults, changes in metabolism and age-related bone and muscle loss make eating well essential to healthy aging. While it can be a challenge, it is possible to enjoy dining out while making decisions that support your best self. Here are five tips to consider.
- Google before you go. Most restaurants have an online menu, which makes it easy for health-conscious eaters to select their meal in advance. Some venues even provide calorie and nutrition information.
- Pass the bread bowl or tell your server not to bring it to the table. You could save more than 300 empty calories this way!
- Start with a salad. Load up on veggies before the meal and you’ll eat fewer calories when the main course is served.
- Order an appetizer instead of an entrée. Restaurant portions are often significantly larger than those you’d prepare at home. Oftentimes, the appetizer portions are just right. Skip the fried foods, however.
- Ask for your to-go box early. When your meal arrives, reduce the temptation to overindulge by packing up a portion right away.
