    Kids Central Inc

Hundreds of children in our own communities need safe, loving homes, and they need them now. In the Florida Counties of Citrus, Hernando, Lake, Marion and Sumter, over 1,500 children have experienced the trauma of abuse or neglect and been removed from their parents or caregivers. Less than half of these children are in licensed foster homes with loving families, and 256 are available for adoption. The need is great, especially for older youth, but so are the blessings for those who feel called to open their hearts and homes to children who have suffered.

    Residential Lock Boxes

    Knox Box Program

A program of The Villages Public Safety Department. From The Villages Daily Sun, February 19, 2024: There are residential lock boxes through Knox Box that hold a resident's door key, and only first responders can access it for emergency entry to a residence. "Instead of breaking in, and if there's not flames we don't want to destroy somebody's property," said Don Neebling, VPSD deputy chief of administration. "We can also get in not just for fires, but for medical calls and that's really the best thing it's used for." While all commercial buildings are required to have these key boxes by fire code and the agency has used them since it started in 1999, the first residential Knox Box was acquired in March 2017. There are now 151 in use in The Villages through VPSD. And they are becoming more popular, he said. Residents can request a Knox Box through the company's website, knoxbox.com, for about $200 and they must include the public safety agency they want to register with, in this case "Villages Fire/Rescue." Only that agency will have the universal key to access the box. VPSD staff all have unique codes that keep track of who has accessed a universal key kept in each of its vehicles. Neebling said. Once a box is requested, Neebling gets a notification and accepts it. When the homeowner receives their box, someone with the department comes out to put in the key and lock it since they are only one with the universal key. There are two installation options, once that screws in and another that slides over the door. Either way, Neebling suggests residents place the box at their front door so first responders know the person has one. There are sample boxes at the VPSD Station 44, 3035 Morse Blvd., and residents can stop by to view the samples and get more information. For more information, contact the fire department at 352-205-8280 or visit Knox Boxes website, knoxbox.com

LAKE COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

Lake County is served by a Board of County Commissioners representing five districts in the County. Elected by the County at large, each serves a four-year term, in which the terms are staggered. District 3 Commissioner Kirby Smith was named Chairman in December 2022.
    Douglas B. Shields (D1), Leslie Campione (D4), Josh Blake (D5), Sean M. Parks (D2), Kirby Smith (D3)
Left to Right: Douglas B. Shields (D1), Leslie Campione (D4), Josh Blake (D5), Sean M. Parks (D2), Kirby Smith (D3)

The Board of County Commissioners is the legislative branch of County government. Individual Commissioners are both lawmaking officers and fiscal representatives of Lake County. The County Manager and County Attorney are appointed by the Commissioners to oversee daily operations, personnel, and legal matters.

The Commissioners appoint citizens to more than 30 different committees. Vacancies on these advisory boards are posted as the terms are fulfilled. Those interested in serving go through an application and selection process. The Board normally meets in regular sessions the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 9 a.m. In addition, the Board meets in work sessions whenever necessary to discuss matters of general importance. These meetings are generally held on the second Tuesday of each month at 9 a.m. Minutes are recorded of all Commission meetings, work sessions and public hearings, and made a part of the record. In 1888, the City of Tavares became the County seat. Tavares, situated between Mount Dora and Eustis, was founded more than a century ago by Major Alexander St. Clair Abrams, who built a railroad line through the town to support his lumber company business.
For more information on upcoming meetings, or for information on board agenda items, contact the County Manager’s Office at 352-343-9888 or e-mail [email protected].
