The Villages Public Safety Department offers smoke detector assistance to residents of the Villages as part of our Fall Prevention Program. The Smoke Detector Program is designed for residents who are disabled or unable to climb ladders and install a smoke detector or change the batteries in their smoke detector. This can be scheduled by calling VPSD Headquarters at (352) 205-8280 and scheduling a Public Education Technician to come to your home and provide installation and/or battery replacement. The calls for smoke detector service are taken beginning at 8:00am, Monday through Friday, and the resident will be placed in a scheduling queue.

Regular maintenance of smoke detectors is crucial for ensuring home safety, and one key aspect of this is changing the batteries. Smoke detectors are essential life-saving devices that provide early warnings in the event of a fire. A malfunctioning smoke detector, often due to a dead battery, can fail to alert you, leading to serious risks.

Experts, such as the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), recommend changing the battery in your smoke detector at least once a year. A good rule of thumb is to do so when you change your clocks for daylight saving time, ensuring you don’t forget. However, if the detector emits a “chirping” or “beeping” sound, it’s time to replace the battery, even if it hasn’t been a full year.

When replacing the battery, use the correct type (usually 9-volt or AA) as specified in the manufacturer’s instructions. Always test the smoke detector after battery replacement to ensure it is functioning properly.

It’s also important to replace the entire smoke detector unit every 10 years, as the sensors can become less effective over time. Additionally, ensure your detectors are installed in proper locations—on each level of the home, outside sleeping areas, and inside bedrooms.
