On January 13th we experienced the third time this growing season that the thermometer dipped below freezing. On January 13th, at Shared Harvest Garden, we experienced the third time this season that various crops did not survive the cold. You may understand the frustration associated with crop losses. What did we do? We replanted.
We did not just replant. We worked to understand how we might improve practices to prevent future crop failure due to temperature variation. We obviously cannot prevent freezing temperatures, but we can improve soil health which will help in growing healthier plants.
Why am I telling you this? Is not creating our community like planting a garden on open land? It takes vision. We are fortunate to have a development team that continues to have outstanding vision. We are also fortunate to have District Government oversee our assets and ensure continuity. Our VHA leadership teams work constantly throughout the community to understand the wishes and needs of Villages residents. Can we improve the base? Can we collaborate with our partners to ensure the base is stable and enhancements are possible?
We are extremely fortunate. Our VHA leadership teams include residents with a variety of talents. That is not enough! I am always looking for residents with life experiences that will increase our talent pool. If you are someone who would like to participate, send me an email. If you are interested in participating in an organization that believes in positive constructive dialogue, problem solving, education, and philanthropy, join our organization. Contact information and how to join information is on our website, thevha.net
