Home » Cold or Flu? What to Do When Symptoms Arise

In Florida, late fall to early spring brings a reprieve from humidity and the threat of hurricanes. But it’s also cold and flu season. Both contagious respiratory illnesses can cause coughing, runny nose, sore throat, headache, and fatigue. The flu packs a more powerful punch, however, and may include sinus congestion, fever, muscle pain, loss of appetite, vomiting, and chills.

While the flu virus can be dangerous and even life threatening for certain people, more often it simply makes life miserable for around seven days and then goes away. Symptoms of a cold can last from two days to two weeks but can be mild enough for us to function normally. If you suspect you have the flu, report your symptoms to your primary medical care team. In some cases, and where appropriate, medication can be prescribed to reduce intensity and duration of the flu. It is also important that your physician knows you are sick so they can monitor your progress and escalate your care level if necessary. They can likewise provide guidance on the use of over-the-counter remedies that may be appropriate for you.
