On the first Friday of February, you may be seeing red—but it’s not a fashion statement. Rather, it’s National Wear Red Day, an event to raise awareness for women’s heart health. May it remind us that heart disease claims far too many lives—but it doesn’t have to. Through education and lifestyle changes, we can empower ourselves and the women we love to experience greater health and longevity.
“Over the past few years, an increasing number of women have sought care and treatment in our cardiology clinics for symptoms suggestive of coronary artery disease,” said cardiologist Robert Herman, MD, at The Villages Health. While it’s often thought of as a man’s disease, cardiovascular disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined, yet only 44% of women realize it’s their greatest health threat. The disease affects women of all ages, even those who are fit and active.
