On April 19, 1775, in Arlington, Massachusetts, my 8th removed Grandfather, Jason Russell, was killed in the doorway of his house during a battle with the British. Jason was engaged in the Battle of Concord, at the start of the American Revolution. We are celebrating a July 4th holiday 250 years later because of those many sacrifices. Reflect on those sacrifices as we celebrate.
Eight generations later I am honored to follow in the footsteps of my Grandfather as a community leader. I wonder if the conversation at Jason’s house involved positive constructive dialogue to solve problems. I wonder if that trait has passed through the generations.
I often speak at public meetings offering an opinion on matters whose outcome will make a difference in the community. Historically, a VHA position on community matters results in positive outcomes. Often, I ruffle the feathers of committee members who disagree with my position. My problem is when a committee member refuses to look at positive options. My problem is when a committee member pulls a 180-degree turn and then reverses direction again. Enough said?
Where would we all be if Grandfather Jason and others like him did not make the ultimate sacrifice? Where will we be if we do not have positive constructive dialogue to solve problems?
Thank you Grandfather Jason Russell
