One of the City of Wildwood’s top priorities is maintaining the quality and appearance of our community. From parks and public spaces to street signs and roadways, we take great pride in ensuring that our city remains clean, safe, and well cared for. Residents can be confident that their tax dollars are being put to work through thoughtful planning and coordinated efforts with regional partners to deliver efficient and effective maintenance services.
Among the most frequently asked questions we receive is about roadway maintenance, particularly in areas such as The Villages, where multiple entities share responsibilities. The City of Wildwood’s Public Works Department currently maintains more than 152 miles of roadway within The Villages, with a goal of achieving an average Pavement Condition Index (PCI) rating of 88 on a standardized scale from 0 (worst) to 100 (new).
Each road segment is carefully evaluated to determine the most appropriate and cost-effective treatment, allowing us to preserve roadway quality, extend lifespan, and protect taxpayer investment. While the City does not maintain regionally significant roads or multi-modal paths, we take our responsibility for local roadway maintenance very seriously.
In partnership with The Villages, the City assumes responsibility for more than 20 miles of new roadways each year. Newly constructed roads are initially maintained by the developer for a two-year period. After that time, the City conducts a thorough inspection to ensure the road meets established standards before formally accepting it into the municipal system.
Once accepted, roadways are incorporated into the City’s proactive pavement preservation program. All newly accepted or reconstructed roadways begin receiving rejuvenation treatments, which are typically scheduled on a five-year cycle until conditions warrant more substantial pavement preservation measures. As pavement conditions evolve, the City implements appropriate treatment strategies, which may include micro-surfacing, mill and overlay or full-depth reclamation, depending on the specific needs and condition of the roadway. Using advanced modeling tools and engineering evaluations, the City develops and maintains a comprehensive pavement management plan to effectively guide these preservation and rehabilitation efforts.
We are proud of the condition of our streets and the dedicated Public Works professionals who make this work possible. Roadway rejuvenation schedules and related information will be shared on the City’s website at www.wildwood-fl.gov and on our Facebook page, @WildwoodFlorida, as they become available.
For residents who would like to learn more or ask questions, I encourage you to attend one of our Mondays with the Manager events. These informal gatherings provide an opportunity to engage directly with City leadership, share ideas, and stay informed about ongoing projects and initiatives. See when the next Meeting with the Manager is by going to the City website.
Residents can also stay connected by visiting the City’s website at www.wildwood-fl.gov. There, you can sign up for alerts to receive updates on road closures, news releases, and other important information. You can also subscribe to the City’s monthly newsletter, The Wildwood Connection, which highlights upcoming events, project updates, and other community news.
