Staying hydrated is especially important during the hot summer months, particularly for seniors. As we age, our sense of thirst often decreases, meaning we may already be dehydrated before we even feel thirsty.
Years ago, while living in Bermuda and working in the Emergency Room at King Edward VII Hospital, local residents would often come in saying they had “the falling out.” We learned this meant they were feeling foggy, dizzy, weak, or experiencing vertigo, usually caused by dehydration. They could be 8 years or 88 years old; dehydration was often the cause, and more than 60% of the patients were treated were dehydrated. Florida’s climate is very similar to Bermuda’s, making hydration just as important here at home.
Dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, confusion, dizziness, muscle cramps, constipation, urinary tract infections, low blood pressure, and an increased risk of falls. In severe cases, it may even require hospitalization.
One of the best habits is to drink water before you feel thirsty. Don’t wait for your body to sound the alarm. Water is the best choice for hydration. Coffee, sugary sodas, and alcoholic beverages can actually contribute to dehydration. Many health professionals recommend aiming for approximately half your body weigh in ounces of water daily, adjusting for heat, activity and induvial health needs.
An easy way to stay on track is to measure your intake using a reusable water bottle marked with ounces. Sip consistently throughout the day rather than trying to drink large amounts all at once. Hydration is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to support brain function, energy, balance, and overall wellness.
