Message from the President of the VHA
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE VHA Hello again, everyone. This month I’d like to talk about a few of the programs that the VHA provides to our residents and why they may of value to you to attend or for you to recommend to someone you know. This month I’ll focus on only three of them but, there are many more that promote living the dream. New Resident’s Night: This program provides important information for residents that are moving here or live here. We have speakers that give short descriptions of their responsibilities for everything from Law Enforcement, Tax Collectors, Property Assessors, Veterans Benefits, Community Improvement Council, Seniors verses Crime, Lifelong Learning College, Bicycle Safety, Master Gardeners, Library use to The District Government. We have Volunteer organizations who discuss how you can help the Villages Regional Hospital, The Sheriff’s Ranch for Children, CERT and others. The speakers all arrive early and stay after to answer your questions. It’s held on the second Tuesday Night each month at 7:00 PM at Colony Cottage Recreation Center. Golf Cart Safety Clinic: This program provides information to Residents regarding how they can stay safe in the operation of their golf carts. Through the use of videos, a safety equipment display and discussion periods we present how to operate your golf cart, how to maintain it and what the insurance requirements are. There are representatives from local Law Enforcement, Golf Cart Maintenance Experts and Insurance Company Representatives available to answer your questions. It’s held on the third Wednesday morning of each month at 9:00AM at Colony Cottage Recreation Center. Helping Hands Program: This program is one of our favorites. It provides instant feedback from recipients in terms of smiles and thanks for our efforts. We take donated durable medical equipment from residents, clean it, refurbish it, store it and when asked, provide it free to other residents who need the equipment. It can range from crutches (which we have plenty of) to wheel chairs and even electric scooters. We deliver the equipment to resident’s homes and pick it up when they’re finished with it, if they choose to donate it back. If you would like to help with the cleaning, refurbishing, delivery and pickup portions of the program, call our program director Bill Gottschalk @ (352)430-8011. We can always use more help. There are many other programs we participate in such as CARFIT, Operation SAFE, mobi-PET, Merchants to Members. If you have questions please contact any of our VHA Members listed in the front of The Voice to get information regarding any program we provide. Last, but certainly not least, I’d like to give a special shout out to Scott Workman and The Villages Transportation Department who graciously provided transportation for over 100 VHA Members, Submarine Veterans Club Members and DAV Members to Bushnell National Cemetery on Sunday 24 May so that we could support “Flags for the Fallen” and place flags on the graves for Memorial Day. It was a moving experience and we are extremely grateful. Here’s hoping we all have a safe and enjoyable summer. Fred Briggs, President The Villages Homeowners Association
