Happy Birthday America

“This is my country! Land of my birth!
This is my country! Grandest on earth!
I pledge thee my allegiance, America, the bold,
For this is my country to have and to hold.

This is my country! Land of my choice!
This is my country! Hear my proud voice!
I pledge thee my allegiance, America, the bold,
For this is my country! To have and to hold.”

“This is My Country” Words: Don Raye; Music: Al Jacobs

Tomorrow marks 237 years since those intrepid members of the 2nd Continental Congress made public our nation’s Declaration of Independence and declared the 13 Colonies a new, free and independent nation.

Today, we celebrate our nation’s birthday with flags, parades, speeches, picnics, barbecues, fireworks and fun.

And that is just as one of our Founding Fathers – and the 2nd President of our fledgling nation – predicted.  (However, he was a bit premature in thinking July 2 would be “The Day.”)

John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail, “The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America.  I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival.  It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.  It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

Whether this is the land of our birth, or whether we got here as fast as we could – we all share in an enduring love of our nation.  This bold and daring experiment in self-government that has lasted far beyond all the naysayers predictions.

Lines from another verse of  “This is My Country” –

“My soul is rooted deeply in the soil on which I stand,
For these are mine own United States.”

So with pride, here’s to our great nation – Happy Birthday America, you’re doing great!
