Ocean Springs Remembers Katrina

Ocean Springs, Mississippi sitting directly on the Gulf of Mexico suffered record surge levels and sustained winds of 125 mph when hurricane Katrina made landfall on the evening of August 29, 2005. In the wake of the storm Americans rallied to the support of New Orleans to the entire affected gulf coast, and The Villages adopted Ocean Springs as a Sister City.  The Villages Homeowners Association delivered donations from generous Villagers plus a matching contribution from the developer totaling about $200,000 that was used to build a new Senior Citizens Center downtown.  Later this month representatives from the VHA and The Villages will return to Ocean Springs to renew friendships and celebrate the city’s recovery.
