Blistering Shingles Update

Owens Corning (OC) has continued to cooperate with residents of The Villages and the VHA in resolving a “blistering” problem with some of their shingles manufactured about five years ago at their Jacksonville shingle plant.  Early in July a team of product developers and technical engineers from OC headquarters in Toledo, Ohio, visited The Villages, spending three days on their initial review of residents’ shingle problems.  During this first visit about 100 homes were inspected.

The Owens Corning team returned for two more four-day visits during the weeks of July 26th and August 2nd to conclude their troubleshooting and resolve residents’ open claims.  While the inspectors and product engineers worked in The Villages, OC warranty personnel and managers continued doing their due diligence and review of the VHA’s request to accommodate the Villagers who are second owners, who have blistering OC shingles and hadn’t transferred their OC warranty upon purchase of their previously owned home in The Villages.   

The VHA has not discovered a single second owner who even knew that a shingle warranty transfer was required upon purchase.  While OC is providing good warranty support for original owners, a second-owner with blistered shingles and outside the warranty transfer period may be facing a repair bill of about $6000 or more.  The VHA has requested that OC give consideration to these second owners, and ideally reopen a warranty transfer window for them to reactivate their shingle warranties.  OC has informed the VHA that a decision may be anticipated by mid-August.
