Helping Hands Resume Operations

Greetings, As President of The VHA Helping Hands program, I, like many of you, watched Governor DeSantis last Wednesday evening in anticipation of what Phase One of our recovery program would be like.  As I listened to his remarks my mind wandered over the past two months and how we as Villagers responded.  We did not demand from our public officials what they could not provide, what we did was look for ways to help others.  We made masks, donated food, and found other ways to help those less fortunate.  We prayed for our doctors, nurses, first responders, and those affected by this terrible disease.  As Governor DeSantis stated, we will now take steps to a slow methodical approach to recovery and what we considered normal. I, along with our board of directors and great volunteers, are happy to announce that The Helping Hands Program will resume operations on Thursday, May 7.  There will be changes as we move through Phase One and I will use the rest of my message to explain our procedures.
  • Procedures will be modified to accommodate special requirements regarding state guidelines.
  • Our hours of operation will remain the same:  11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. daily.
PICK UP PROCEDURE We will be open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to issue equipment requested by phone (352) 973-2284 prior to the pick-up date.
  • Residents exhibiting symptoms of virus:  Remain home and have a family member or friend pick up equipment.
  • We will not have a delivery service at this time.  Pick-up only
  • Residents must wear a mask of some type when picking up equipment
  • Residents will be required to maintain social distance guidelines (6 feet)
  • One resident in main office at a time.  Three residents will be allowed in the conference room area practicing proper social distancing.
RETURNING EQUIPMENT We will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays for the return of equipment.  (we have around 300 pieces of equipment on loan and due back currently).
  • Residents exhibiting symptoms of virus: Remain home and have a family member or friend return equipment.
  • Residents are requested to have original tag from equipment or agreement form received when equipment was picked up.  If you do not have either of those items, please print on a piece of paper your name, phone number and type of equipment being returned.
  • Residents may return equipment by car or golf cart, curb side, behind the VHA office in the parking lot off Paige Road.  Helping Hands volunteers will take one vehicle at a time.
  • Residents must wear a mask of some type when passing equipment to Helping Hands volunteers, or place equipment on paved area for the Helping Hands volunteers.
Please understand our process may be slower as we reopen.  We have new computer procedures as well as equipment sanitizing procedures that will slow the process down.  All our equipment has been sprayed with a Medical Grade sanitizer/disinfectant prior to being issued.  As always, our volunteers are prepared to take monetary donations.  At this time, we cannot accept donations of DME equipment. To join our team, give us a call at (352) 973-2284, or send an email to VHA.helpinghands@gmail.com. Thanks for the opportunity to serve, Bill Gottschalk President, The VHA Hel

VHA ADVOCATE OPPORTUNITIES

Our Vision is “Keeping the Dream Alive”.  As “guardians of our Life and Lifestyle” we do so through compassion, advocacy, and education.

The open relationship and communication we share with our “Circle of Partners” allow us to find the best solutions to issues for all concerned.

Living in the nation’s most well known and successful, did I mention fastest growing retirement community is unbelievable.  But as we enjoy our retirement, there will likely come a time when building and giving back to the community becomes more important.  We all gained valuable experience and business expertise in our working years, and the VHA has a current need for these talents.

We are an all-volunteer organization in need of a few more experienced individuals in marketing, recruiting, fundraising and people to people organizers.

To learn more about how you can help contact us at volunteer@thevha.net or call Nominating Chairperson  Joe Elliot at (757) 846-1998
