THE VILLAGES WAY – HOEDOWN
Old-time television….when we were kids, programs were limited. There were the ones our parents liked to watch (Lawrence Welk, anyone) and then there were the ones we liked to watch.
Do the following names or programs mean anything to you?
Hopalong Cassidy (William Boyd)
Dale Evans & Roy Rogers
The High Chaparral
Richard Boone (Have Gun Will Travel)
Well, maybe you don’t remember all of them, but I bet you remember some of them.
Did you ever pretend with your siblings or your neighborhood kids, or even by yourself that you were any of those characters? We wrestled with the “bad guys”. We were always the “white hat” never the villains. We cheered when justice was served and the bad guys put away. We rode our pretend horses, and pulled our pretend weapon. We put our sister or brother “in jail”. We rounded up cattle. Oh, those were the carefree days.
So, let’s all travel back to that era just for a day.
Buckle up those chaps, put on the spurs, find your long-packed-away cowboy hat, and mosey up to the bar and order a sarsaparilla (in our case – beer or wine).
Enjoy a day where you can bring your grandchildren or your spouse, and imagine you are “back in the saddle”. Try your hand at Cowchip Bingo, sample some Cowboy Stew, watch a Lasso Demonstration, see the 6 Gun Cowboys shoot it out and enjoy the all day music entertainment. Huge Kids Zone with pony rides, live animals to pet and lots of fun and games.
Relive the days when cowboys ruled.
The VHA Hoedown will bring back smiles and fond memories, so if you want to wear your best western gear, or make a cowboy/cowgirl costume, or just wear your best cowboy hat, it will all be for a good cause. Just don’t forget your bandana in case you need to “rob a bank”.
I’ll see you all at the OK corral, pardner…….
Carol Lynn Nelson
