Before a medical emergency or an unplanned need for medical assistance, there is much that a new or seasonal resident in The Villages can do to be prepared.
- Find out where the nearest urgent care centers in your area are and have pertinent personal medical information and data with you.
- Use the Emergency Room for medical emergencies and life threatening matters where there’s access to a full medical staff and facilities.
- Use Urgent Care centers for non-life threatening whenever possible, as it may be more efficient and less expensive than an Emergency Room.
- When in doubt as to whether it’s appropriate to call 911, make the call.
- Select a primary care doctor locally and have your medical information duplicated for local availability.
- Ensure that your insurance policy or plan is locally accepted by your doctor and health system.
- File any critical medical documents with The Villages Health System, such as life support choices.
- Sign up for locally available support programs like Sumter County’s Vial of Life and “Peace of Mind” (www.sumtercountysheriff.org).

The Central Florida Health Alliance (parent company of The Villages Health System) website lists all doctors with privileges at The Villages. A complete directory with physician details, credentials, picture and contact information is viewable and printable on www.cfhalliance.com.
Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders (SHINE) representatives are available in The Villages to answer residents’ questions about their health insurance coverage and acceptance in The Villages region.
